Subsection ARains are one of the most challenging time for any photographer, Wildlife photographers have more problems since they get directly exposed to the elements. 2 problems strike main on a wildlife photographer in rains 1) low light and slow shutter speed 2) Protection of the equipment from rains Low shutter speeds can be countered by steady hand and a good IS system on the lens, Canon IS probably is very much the smoothest and the safest bet on Image stabilization. The technique used in this particular photograph was to scout on the ground with a Umbrella held in the tripod collar of the lens, This helps to hold the lens and the umbrella in the same hand also gives a vertical support to the lens from one side. This is a technique i developed to counter the rains , this helps to protect the camera and the lens from direct rains. A rain cover for camera and lens does help however the equipment cannot be maneuvered well and in wildlife situation the flexibility of use is the only way you can capture a good moment. In the current photograph the aim was to catch the snake flicking the tongue and also to freeze the whole snake with the rains in the background. Slow shutter speed help to get the rain effect in the frame however the tongue moment is missed as its super fast sometimes finally I managed to get it in some action as the tongue flicked, If any one aims for this and want to get it in one attempt its near impossible and I have like 50 frames of this snake when I managed this tongue out. Getting better shutter speeds can be achieved with the higher ISO however due care needs to be taken as to not push it too up as in such conditions a lot of noise may appear in the pictures. Do keep the Equipment under the umbrella as far as possible, the current range of equipments do help in some form of water resistance however cannot be termed as waterproof. Also once the pictures are clicked then its imperative to dry the equipment with dry cloth and then may be blow it with a hair dryer to take out any water left and then the equipment should be safely stored in the bag covered with a great amount of Silica gel. Silica gel helps in taking off any moisture around the equipment and keeping the fungus away. The major danger in rains is the fungus that follows and its to be protected. Hence clicking in the rains involve a technique of shooting the subjects in rains and then protecting the equipment past the shoot. By Vishal Jadhav - How to tips B
