What is photoSIG?
photoSIG is a community of photographers and photography enthusiasts, ranging from amateurs to working professionals. photoSIG members may critique photos that have been submitted by other users and may also submit their own photos for review by the community.
What Can I Do Here?
If you're just starting out, then you might start by looking at the Tutorial, then proceed on to the Photos page to see the most recent photos submitted by photoSIG members. If you see a photo that you like, and you are a member, then you may enter a critique of the photo. After you've seen the latest photos, you can try checking out the highest rated photos, or maybe the most controversial photos. You can also browse photos by subject category or by many other categories. You can also stop by the Forums page, where you will find hundreds of messages from other photographers on various topics of interest.

September Assignment
from del/Administrator (0)
on September 1, 2010 4:52:51 PM CDT
Here is another member suggestion, this one from karin2007/Karin. Make a photo which has a silhouette as a principal feature. According to Merriam-Webster, a silhouette is a dark material on a light ground, or an outline filled with a solid color. A popular web definition says these are produced when the subject is between the light source and the camera. This popular web definition is actually a contre jour. So, my definition, which we will use in this assignment, is that of an outline filled with a solid color. The typical way to make one is to interpose the subject in front of the light source, and expose such that the silhouette is solid black, or at least solid dark gray. (i.e., no fill flash or reflected light to lighten and expose gradations in value in the fill).
So, make a photo that includes a prominent silhouette, as described above. Try to do this in a way that creates an interesting photo as well. In other words, don't get bound up in the technique to the extent that you produce something dull. There might be nuances to this; I leave discovery of those to the photographers.
To qualify for this month's assignment,
- Submit a photo which has a prominent silhouette,
- Be sure to include the words "September Assignment" in your comment.
If you have a story to go with the photo that you want to share with us, put it in the comment area below the critiques.
If you have any questions, email an admin. If your photo is deemed to not meet our assignment criteria and hence removed, please accept our decision graciously. Our decisions are not subjects for debate, so if you are not sure, ask first. To include your entry in the assignment, just check off the box that says 2010 09 ~ Silhouette. You can view previous assignments here. You may submit as many photos as you like into the assignment. Good luck!
This assignment will be enabled on September 1 and run through September 30.
