Submission for the Scavenger Hunt II - category 'contra-jour'

We had heavy dew again yesterday, and I had previously located this field. Arrived a few minutes before sunrise and waited... We've had some good rain in the last 2 weeks, and there was a verdant growth of new grass, which was saturated with dew. Under these trees, each blade of grass had a ball of dew on it's tip. In the open field, the dew was so heavy that from this angle it looks white.

I wanted to have the model (me) further away and shooting the sunrise, but didn't think there was time to get there in the 10 seconds after starting the shot.

(Edit) The 'halo' over my head is not an artifact. See the discussion on the first crit.

(Edit 2) The original full frame image, imported into PS as camera raw, auto levels, auto contrast, saved as jpeg. You can see the tiny balls of dew on top of each blade of grass.

Idea is good ...I think closer to the man model would be better...Warm sunset light mask edition very good.

Nice work for this category...Regards

It is an interesting interpretation of contre jour using HDR in the processing. Obviously we would not expect silhouettes in the shot. The rim lighting on the jeans is a nice subtle feature. You have already talked about the head. I would have attempted a fix to get rid of it. The HDR treatment on the houses in the distance looks kind of flat. I like the composition with the tree and fence line creating an off center vanishing point. A different and unique interpretation of the category.

David,
Really like this shot, the colours are stunning. I think that the halo should go, one way or another, even if it means shaving your hair off! Joking aside, I really think that it would be a much better image without the halo, whatever may have caused it. I like the unusual crop size, it adds to the scene.

A very nice image you captured here David and the title certainly fits as well. The colors and overall composition are nicely done here. A very pretty photo for sure and one that is pleasing to the eye. Overall I really like it a lot. Thanks for sharing it with us. Donna

Hi, David,
I think it's a superb picture. I really like the colors and would want to think that this is what my eye would see. The only problem that i see is that house right behind the model's butt, i wish it would not be there. Cheers!

Hi David - I like this photo quite a bit. Overall, it is quite a nice landscape shot, with the nice mist on the left and side and the great fence on the right. Others might disagree, but I wonder if it could be better if you put less foreground in, and got more of the tree top. It just looks like a beautiful tree and I think more of it in the shot would help. Cheers! Jonathan

nicely done! your dramatic pose helps get our attention and the lighting on the grass is very pleasing to view - the only minor thing for me is the right side of the image which i think competes with you for attention - I might try cropping the lighter golden tones out - they're really nice, but you want attention focussed on you and what you're looking at i think - John

Congratulations on a well thought out shot. You did not have time for many tries at this (maybe just the one), so planning was vital. Exposure looks great for this kind of shot. I like some of the little things, like the ground fog in the distance, and what looks like a light frost on the ground in the field beyond the grass. If you could have done it without the strong edge effects, it would have been perfect. Maybe those are just inherent in this kind of light; the rest of the exposure is fine.

I really like this concept and composition also ...though I would also like to see a vertical shot to capture more of the large tree near you...though the fence to the right does add to the photo...nice halo... :-) i really like the lighting and shadows ...thank you for sharing.

Hi David, I think the HDR served you well here. The original you posted was a lot less dramatic to view. The effect on the grass makes it look like an early morning frost instead of dew, especially in the "white" field behind you. As already mentioned, everything in this photos just seems to fall together and work. (And falling into the follicle challenged group myself, I won't comment on the halo.) Take care, Rob.

Beautiful shot david, i love everything about it, you have positioned the camera in the perfect spot to capture the fence and trees running off to the right, grass in focus in the foreground and the house in focus in the background with a soft hint of fog creeping in or away, the branches reaching out as if to touch the asurper in to its territory and then you the photographer standing exactly at the right spot to balance it all, sorry about the hair, it cost you a thumb hehehe

Talk about a lot of work setting this up and executing this well! You did do a great job David in a number of ways.

First, it is a very good "Contre-jour" image fitting the category nicely. There's great backlighting on your head area but what also helps is the edge lighting along each pant leg.

I like your body position. It shows good shapes that are easy to recognize. The large trees are a great sky reducer as well as a pleasing form to hold the right side for interest.

I am glad you got the whole house showing in the left background. However, that light house right down the center is slightly overlapped by some branches. Maybe I would have cloned it out since it is an eye catcher.

Post processing is a mix for me. I would like to see the original when all is done.

If you cropped some (size is not quite the normal format ratio), you did a good job of eliminating other distractions.

I don't love the pasty colors very much and the orange halo around your head does look a bit odd and strong. I am wondering whether you combined some adjustments that included saturation and maybe shadow/highlights to get more detail out of the shadowy/darker areas. I've seen this many many times and the fine textures lose their crisp glow. If this sounds confusing, sorry. For one thing, the dew covered grasses do not look shiny enough and don't seem to reflect the sun through the moisture in a normal view. Also, there are color tones in the distant areas that do not look realistic enough. It may be a good trade overall however if the foreground just didn't have enough 'pop'. 2.2TU for this nice submission. :)Robin

Great crit as usual, Robin.

All good points, some of which I pondered over and made the best compromise. That branch on top of the little house I hadn't noticed.

I'll post the original later.

Hi David! Well executed image - the contra-jour effect well done. I like the mood that the image conveys, the colors, the slight fog in the bg, the huge trees and the shadows they produce. Must have been a rather difficult task to take this image with self-timer, having ten seconds time and further blocking the sun just in the right way - nice idea, but I must admit, your body posture does really not appeal to me, even though including you while taking a photo at the same time is a good idea. Cheers, Karin

The big trees and the fence are what appealed to me as well. (Plus, it's one of the few areas around which is not fenced in barbed wire...)

David, is a fantastic image, more when read ur comment of dew and grass making it look as snow for reflection. Colors are fantastic, vibrant, Detail level is great in all the image. I'm trying to image how did u do to put ur head to cover the sunshine. Amazing. Great perspective. I would crop a few in left, close to houses in horizon, and in maybe a few in right to make a more confortable format but is a taste thing, and will loose nothing, cuz is wonderful in everyway Fabulous shot with better composition. Feel proud of it. Best for u. -Fernando-

I wondered if someone was going to comment on that 'halo'...

Unfortunately, it's no halo. My hair is getting thin, very thin, on top. Bright light from the side - that's what you see :(

To get my head over the sun, I just looked back so that my head shadow covered the camera. Then looked down just before the shot.

Very generous of you Fernando.

Maybe I'll mention that in my photo comments above - the Hunters are a critical lot and usually don't read other crits before writing their own...
