Born in 1955, I'm a native of Helsinki, Finland. An amateur photographer; I have a daytime job as a teacher in junior high school and shoot in my spare time. Not much of that left nowadays.
I've been taking snapshots all my life, bought a film SLR in the '80s, but nothing really came out of that. After getting my first digicam (Olympus UZ 750 - still have it, though I had to get an Oly E-1, too) there was no turning back. Shooting digital gives you such instant feedback - very rewarding and encouraging, also very demanding. If you're willing, it just forces you to learn and the learning curve is not as steep as with film.
I joined photoSIG in summer of 2004 and it has become a very valuable tool of self-education for me. There's nothing that more effectively forces you to develop yourself than getting critique on your work. Much fun and joy too - sometimes also frustration, but I've learned that it's a part of the deal. So all critique is welcome.
For my own critiques, I have no real agenda. I just try find some valuable insights to a photo that haven't been noted before. If those help somebody, then good. But for me there's also a selfish side to critiquing. Many times I find myself analyzing a photo not just for the person who took and submitted it, but for my own learning ...and enjoyment.
