mudgeon n : a rare kind of bird

An old interest in photography was rekindled with the introduction of digital cameras that approach the level of quality attainable with 35mm film. All photography is a creative exercise involving composition of light and texture with a subject. All photography is also a compromise between what is seen and what can be reproduced. Shot film for years (mostly 35mm, some medium format) and processed my own in the early years. Went digital in 2001 and got rid of my film gear (STR201 and SR-1).

Recently, I have added film back to my shooting, with a Bronica ETRsi. I find the discipline in technique required by a manual film camera to be educational, something I was missing with a dSLR. I still use both, still enjoy both, and probably could have adapted use of my Olympus E-1 (now, E-510) to be less forgiving. But, those big negatives sure are nice.

I post photos with the commitment to critique photos as objectively and in as informative a way as I can. I appreciate informative critiques and rate them helpful if they provide good thoughtful suggestions or give me a new perspective, regardless of the rating the critique gives my work. I hope others do the same, as learning and improving come from developing a critical sense. This critical sense comes from creating critiques as well as photos, and I make a special effort to critique those who also critique.

While I have done a little bit of several types of work, from photojournalism to fine art, what I have been doing recently tends to fall roughly into two categories. First, I shoot very conventionally, simply because I find the subject interesting; I use these both for their interest and to refine technique. Second, I look for a different way to portray a subject; this might be viewing from a different angle, looking for a particular kind of light, or using filters to emphasize an element. These tend to be more difficult, and more interesting to me. You can see some of my other work here.
